PPC, or pay-per-click, is advertising that appears in Sponsored or Ads locations on search results pages relevant to the searches performed. These positions are usually above and to the side of organic or natural results and are made to stand out so a searcher knows these are paid results (as opposed to organic results.) Advertisers create their own ad copy, keywords targeted, and set amount per click they are willing to pay. Ads are positioned based on this information. Ad display is not limited to text only, nor limited to search engines. PPC ads can also be displayed on thousands of partner content sites approved by the Search Engine PPC provider.
In SEO, it takes time to see results (especially so if your site is new.) In PPC, however, you see results within hours. Things move so fast due to huge amounts of traffic, that you can lose your house and the shirt off your back if you are not careful. The major Search Engines offer PPC services in sponsored positions on their primary sites and on a very large network of partner sites. This results in huge potential for traffic. Not all is prime, however. PPC campaigns also must be optimized so you get the best traffic and the most traffic for your budget. And to avoid the traps of losing lots of money because visitors are not likely to convert to buyers or your landing-page is not optimum for conversion.
